Perioscope Procedures in Silverdale, WA

Take Control of Your Oral Health With Perioscopecouple riding the bike

Periodontics is making a significant leap forward through the use of periodontal endoscopic treatment or perioscopy. At Lowell Street Dental Implant and Surgical Center, Dr. Greggory Wilde provides periscope to our patients in Silverdale, WA. This new technology increases the effectiveness and accuracy of non-surgical treatment methods and reduces the amount of surgical therapy required for periodontitis treatment.

What Is Periscope?

Periscope, also known as a periodontal endoscopic treatment, is a minimally-invasive procedure that utilizes endoscopic technology to access and remove bacteria and calculus from the subgingival area of the teeth affected by periodontitis. This results in less bleeding, swelling, and discomfort.

The perioscope is an endoscope designed to explore and visualize the space under the gum of teeth involved with periodontitis, the periodontal pocket. The instrument produces an image, on a computer monitor, of the diseased tooth’s root surface. The perioscope allows Dr. Wilde to see the contents of the periodontal pocket and analyze the tooth’s root surface for disease-causing bacterial accumulations like plaque and calculus.

Benefits of Periscope

The perioscope is a dental endoscope used for the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. Compared to traditional periodontal treatments, it offers several benefits, including:

  • Less bleeding and swelling
  • Preservation of healthy tissue
  • Improved patient comfort
  • Enhanced treatment outcomes
  • Identification of previously undetectable tooth root surface flaws without surgery
  • Increased accuracy of periodontal diagnostics and treatment prescription.

These benefits make the Perioscope a valuable tool for Dr. Wilde seeking to improve the outcomes of his patients’ periodontal treatments.

How Periscope Procedures Work

Periscope involves the use of endoscopic technology to access the subgingival area. First, Dr. Wilde will make a small incision in the gum tissue to insert the endoscope. The endoscope is equipped with a camera and light, which enable the dentist to visualize the affected area. Once Dr. Wilde can see the affected area, he uses specialized instruments to remove the bacteria and calculus. We perform the procedure under a local anesthetic, and patients typically experience minimal discomfort.

Performing the Periscope Procedure

During your procedure, Dr. Wilde will access the subgingival area using endoscopic technology. The endoscope provides a clear view of the affected area, allowing the dentist to remove bacteria and calculus using specialized instruments. He may also use lasers or antibiotics to enhance the treatment outcomes. The procedure takes one to two hours, depending on the extent of the periodontal disease.

Post-Treatment Care and Follow-Up

After the procedure, patients will receive detailed instructions for post-operative care. Patients should:

  • Avoid eating, drinking, and smoking for a few hours after the procedure.
  • Follow a soft-food diet for several days.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Attend follow-up appointments as scheduled.
  • Dr. Wilde will prescribe pain medication and antibiotics, if necessary.

Ideal Candidates for Perioscope

While the perioscope offers many benefits, not all patients are ideal candidates for this procedure. Generally, we recommend the perioscope treatment for patients who have:

  • Moderate to severe periodontal disease
  • Deep pockets in their gums
  • Bone loss around their teeth
  • Failed to respond to traditional periodontal treatments
  • A history of gum disease recurrence despite previous treatments

It’s important to note each patient’s case is unique, and only a qualified periodontist like Dr. Wilde can determine if the perioscope is the best treatment option. If you’re interested in the perioscope procedure, we recommend scheduling a consultation with Dr. Wilde to determine if this is the right treatment option for you.

Importance of Periodontal Therapy

The perioscope has created a shift in periodontal care. It doesn’t diminish the power of, or importance of, periodontal surgical therapies. Ultimately, periodontal therapy is about cleaning diseased tooth roots free of bacterial contamination and keeping them free of such accumulations. Periodontal surgical therapy remains the most powerful of therapies to achieve these goals.

The perioscope contributes to the ability to achieve therapeutic results that are similar to, and sometimes better than, those achieved by surgical therapies — without the pain, disfigurement, and cost of surgical therapies. However, many periodontal disease situations can’t be adequately resolved without surgical therapy.
